Mother’s Day Car Ornaments

Inspired by a valentines exchange (by Benzie Design) that I participated in this year, I decided to make some little car hanging cuties out of wool blend felt. I intended to send these only to my exchange partner, however, I have been extremely happy making them and they have turned out so cute and fun. I have one of my Jimmy cat hanging in the rear view window of my car and it makes me smile every day.

If you would like to make one of these car hangers (or ornaments) it is really rather simple. I am sharing a free pattern for my two favorite “sweet hearts” below as Mother’s Day is coming up. These are fun, small, quick, and mailable projects that you can easily send in a Mother’s Day card. You can stuff them to make them puffy or you can leave them flat (better for postal mail) like I did.

You can save and print the images below onto an 11×8.5” piece of paper (fit to scale) and then trace the individual pieces with a sharpie or pencil onto the matte side of freezer paper to transfer the pattern to your felt. Wild Olive has an excellent video of this process. If you want the pattern smaller or bigger you can change the size as desired before printing.

On “light heat”, iron the freezer paper shiny side down onto the color of (wool blend or 100% wool) felt you selected for 2-4 seconds until it is lightly stuck. Warning: Do not use this freezer paper method with cheaper craft felt / it is made of plastic and will ruin your iron when it melts to the surface!

Cut out your pieces of felt along the outline you traced onto the freezer paper and then assemble according to the “layering guide”. Complete with your selected color and type of thread using the “stitch guide”. You can google these stitches for tutorials but you’re welcome to use whatever stitches you wish. I used DMC size 12 pearl thread but I also love DMC six-stranded embroidery floss for projects like this; I would use 3 strands here to embellish and personalize my “sweet heart”.

Please complete these free patterns for personal use and gifting only. Do not sell or redistribute the patterns.
