I have finally started a new dedicated sketchbook for idea development. I’ve been unsuccessfully forcing myself to continue in a variety of other locations for a while now and so a fresh start seemed in order. I’ve never needed much motivation to start a new sketchbook though – if I don’t have at least 3 books in progress at any given time I feel a little lost, honestly. But, nonetheless, I’ve found this new book invigorating as none of the others have been.
As a way to break it in I created a title page and modeled it after this beautiful illustration from book 3 of the Natural History of Insects (1653, Francfort). It contains so many of my favorite things: moths, insects, beasties, vines and flowers…. what’s not to like. My only regret is not adding in a few birds but perhaps I’ll see to that later.
